Hello! August is one of my favourite months. Scrap that – it’s my favourite month. It’s my birthday, I’ve never worked on my birthday (years of never going to school on my birthday meant this became a necessity when I joined the working world!), and there’s normally a little holiday in there or at least a couple of day trips. Gotta love summer.

This year won’t be any different and in fact, I’ll spend my birthday in two countries, which will be a first! I’ll wake up in Latvia and catch a bus to Estonia! I recently shared our summer travel plans over on Mundo Trundle, our travel blog, if you’re curious. But in a nutshell, we’ll be heading to Brussels (YES.), Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Helsinki (for the day!).

That means I’ll be getting little tasters of lots of different languages. Which means that August seems the perfect month to do something I’ve been wanting to for ages with the Instagram Language Challenge: starting at the beginning.

The Words

I’ve picked 28 words or phrases that I think are essential starter words in a new language. Even if you’re not going on holiday this August, there’s never been a better time to learn a little of a new language because, well, there’s no time like the present, right?

The Challenge

For each of the 28 words, find it in the language you’re learning, take a photo or film a short 15 second video to help remember it, and post it on Instagram with the hashtag #IGLC. Kaboom. Simple, no?

There are only 28 prompts because, you never know when you might forget, be super busy, or get eaten by a crocodile and be unable to take part one day. But hopefully those crocodiles will be going hungry this month.

I think that’s all I have to say. Save the image above, pop it on your phone, in your wallet, or by your bedside. Wherever will work best for you will work best for the #IGLC.

I’m really excited to see which new languages you all decide to learn this month! Which language will you pick to learn with the #IGLC this August? Share in the comments!
