It’s super easy to join in. Simply post a photo or video each day on Instagram with #IGLC in the caption and you’re doing it!

The whole point of the Instagram Language Challenge is to inspire language learning, so remember, the prompts are not “words you must learn”, but rather they’re words to inspire something, so wherever you’re at with your language learning, you can join in. Yay!

Language Learning Review for July

Guarani

Duolingo – I’m still using Duolingo almost each day and it’s handy at helping me to get starting writing my sentences in Guarani each day.

Figure out my plan – I think I’ve got there…I think. We don’t have our wifi working fully again yet since returning (and I’m almost out of hotspot data on my phone contract!) which means that I can’t print yet (we have a wifi printer) so I’m really missing my planner! However, I’ve made some notes and we’re expecting the wifi to be up and running in the next couple of days so I’ll soon be able to see everything in one place in a way that makes sense to me.

I made The Solo Language Learner Planner both print and digital ready but for me, I’m all about the physical planning!

Language Reading Challenge

The topic for Shannon’s Language Reading Challenge over at Eurolinguiste last month was “Something written by someone from a country that speaks your language (book doesn’t have to be in your target language)”.

I’ve reorganised my language bookshelf to accommodate my new books from my trip and my Guarani books have a lovely little corner and I’ve been using them regularly as I’m getting back into studying.

Language Learning Goals for August

Guarani

Vocabulary – I’ll be keeping up with my mostly daily Duolingo. It’s super quick and I only do one session a day. I’m also working on creating a Memrise course to share with you if you’re curious and want to start learning a little Guarani. That process is really helping me review vocab.

Grammar – The Memrise course I’m creating is helpful for this too. In addition, I’m using my coursebook and grammar book when I come across grammar points that are new or I want to review.

Reading – I’ll soon be starting to use the bilingual books I bought in Paraguay to learn from. I’ve also got a tab open on my phone’s internet browser for Guarani Wikipedia, which is helpful when I’m in a queue or something and can’t do a full Memrise or Duolingo session.

Listening – This has always been the trickiest bit for me with Guarani because finding audio is so difficult. I’m already listening to more music in Guarani and I’ll try downloading some of the religious podcasts again to use for shadowing or dictation.

Writing – I write 13 sentences every day in Guarani. Odd number I know, but it’s the number of lines on each page of my book I got in Peru before we went to Paraguay.

Speaking – I’m going to start to speak more! I want to restart sessions with Marcelo, my tutor (who you can see in the Guarani episode of Language Stories), and until summer is over and I can actually do that, then I want to start speaking more on my own on Instagram.

Korean

I’m bringing Korean slowly back into my language learning routine so taking things easy to begin with until I can print my planner!

Memrise – I’m using Memrise to refresh the early stuff and the alphabet. Their courses made by themselves are really helpful.

Living Language – My friend Katie at Joy of Languages gave me this awesome Living Language set for Korean not long before we left for our trip. So I’m excited to be back now and have the chance to really use it properly as last time studying Korean, I didn’t have any physical resources and I often wondered if that was a reason I struggled with the language. We shall see!

Language Reading Challenge

The topic for Shannon’s Language Reading Challenge over at Eurolinguiste this month is “A book about a language, a family of languages, a writing system, or something related to linguistics”.

I’ll be reading You Say Potato – A Book About Accents by David and Ben Crystal.

In other news…

Like I mentioned last month, I’m excited to be speaking at Language Masters, an exclusive rooftop event hosted by Teach Yourself and Michel Thomas happening in London on September 26th. I was delighted this month to find out that Katie from Joy of Languages will be joining me, Alex Rawlings, Olly Richards, and Richard Simcott on the panel! I’m working hard in August getting ready to open up the Online Teaching Starter Kit for enrollment. The course normally opens once a year, but this year it’s been quite a gap as I was busy in Paraguay when I would have reopened. This means that you’ve had quite the wait!
