Language Learning Review for April

Use Slovenian a little each day in Slovenia

I did this! And I made a video of my experience too.

Keep going with Korean

This happened! Although my Korean progress feels soooo slow, I know exactly why. It’s been a busy month language wise, with Slovenian and German for travel and bringing a bit of Japanese back into my regular routine.

One of the most common questions I get is if you can learn multiple languages at once. And of course, the answer is yes – but you have to be prepared for slower progress. So I’m prepared for slower progress with my Korean, and I’m happy with that!

German!

This sort of happened!

I fitted in a little German most days, which was what I was aiming for. Generally it was Memrise and reading out loud a double page from a Harry Potter book I bought in a library sale last year.

The thing with this reading is that I’m not reading for the story, I’m just reading to give me something to say.

That said, I would have liked more listening in my day. I did say I would listen to some German podcasts, but I seem to have such a podcast backlog lately that I didn’t get around to finding and downloading any German podcasts. Hey ho!

Japanese

I wanted to bring some Japanese back into my study schedule. Not only because I was missing it, but also because I had some lessons in half-used packages on italki to use before May.

I had my first lesson a couple of weeks ago and it went so well! I was really happy with the fact that I could still communicate in Japanese. Yay!

Language Learning Goals for May

Speak Korean!

I started weekly chats with Shannon, my Korean study partner in April, and one thing we both felt is a lack of speaking. So my goal with Korean for May? To speak!

So how am I going to do this? 3 things: every HelloTalk message in Korean in May will be an audio message, at least one Snapchat post added to my Story each day in Korean, and less study time focused on writing, more focused on listening, repeating, and speaking.

Let’s see how this goes!

So…I started a new language…

One unexpected thing in April, especially given the fact that I had 4 languages going on across the month, was that I started learning Esperanto!

After hitting publish on My Languages To Learn List, I was feeling so inspired to get started.

I created projects on MeisterTask for each language on the list and added the resources I have or am aware of for each. Seeing as Esperanto was a relatively easily accessible language, I decided to start that one first.

And you know what? It’s so fun!

I’m using Duolingo and a tiny brown book I got last year with an Esperanto dictionary for £1 from a car boot sale. Insane!

The other languages

May is going to be a busy month for me – it’s starting at the Polyglot Gathering in Berlin, and ending mid-launch for The Online Teaching Starter Kit. So just a little busy.

Rather than set myself too many crazy goals, I want to focus on a putting together a really good plan going forward to make sure that every language on My Languages to Learn List gets a look in before me and Ashley head off to discover Dobuan next year.

And I like planning so that’s good!
