Did you join the Instagram Language Challenge last month?

It’s totally free + you get to learn a little language each day. Woop!

Want in on the action in October? It’s super simple to make the Instagram Language Challenge part of your language learning goals.

All you have to do is share something on Instagram each day inspired by the daily prompt.

And they’re just that – prompts. That means you don’t have to learn the exact word you see on the prompt list each day. Instead, use that word to inspire your language learning whatever level you’re at.

For example, if the word is “red” and you already know your colours, use the prompt to inspire learning a sentence such as “The thief was caught red-handed” or “The garden was full of (red) roses until the gardener accidentally chopped them all down.”

Language Learning Review for September

Guarani

Vocabulary – My goal was simply to do one session on Duolingo a day, keeping up my daily streak. I missed a couple of days, but have done it most days and have just 10 levels left before I’ve gone twice through the whole course.

Another vocabulary goal was to revisit my Memrise course I started to make but I haven’t done this, which means it’s probably not a priority right now.

Grammar – My goal for grammar was to keep up my regular writing, which helps me to learn and practice new grammar points as well as revise ones I already know. This happened! Woop!

Reading – My goal was to keep using my course book for reading practice. I also read the small book of poems and short stories I bought in Paraguay for Shannon’s 30 Day Reading Challenge. It was interesting as some of it was in Jopara (a mixture of Spanish and Guarani).

Listening – My listening goal was to use music and religious podcasts for shadowing and writing what I hear. This happened! It was successful too so I’ll keep this in my study routine.

Writing – My goal was to write 13 sentences (1 page) in Guarani at least 3 times a week. This happened!

Speaking – My speaking goal was to speak weekly on Instagram. I haven’t really done this in September.

Korean

Memrise + Drops – My goal was to use Memrise and Drops daily. I’ve definitely started using both more, but not quite daily.

Living Language – My goal with this was to get to the end of chapter 3 by the end of September. Well…success. I’m at the end of chapter 4! Yay!

Figure Out a Plan! – My goal was to figure out a plan of how and when I want stuff to happen for Korean. I haven’t really done this as I’ve been focusing on enjoying the daily habit of Korean at the moment.

Other Languages (French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Mandarin, Japanese, Esperanto, Indonesian)

Study Time – My goal for other languages was to use the last 20 minutes of my study time each morning for them, rotating the 10 languages on a 2 week basis. It’s working!

Writing – My writing goal was to use 712 More Things to Write About for writing prompts. This is proving a lot of fun and a good challenge compared to starting again at the beginning for each language, which isn’t what I need to do for most of them.

Listening – My listening goal was to listen to the SBS podcast feeds for all of these languages (and a different Esperanto podcast because they don’t have that) and aim to listen each workday amongst my other podcasts when I’m working. This happened most days! Woop!

Language Reading Challenge

The topic for Shannon’s Language Reading Challenge over at Eurolinguiste in September was “A memoir by someone who lives in a country that speaks your target language (can be from an expat who moved there or someone who is native to the country”.

I found a book on the Kindle app called Which Guay Again?, which is a memoir from Peace Corps volunteer, Mick Dooley. I read this in September, and quite enjoyed it.

I also did the 30 Day Reading Challenge hosted by Shannon, although I wasn’t great as recording my progress on the spreadsheet as I couldn’t get it working on my phone and rarely use my computer during my morning study time.

Alongside my language related reading, in September, I also read Running Up That Hill about endurance running by Vassos Alexander and Crazy Rich Asians.

Running Up That Hill was one part inspiring and one part making me want to never run again (mainly the toe photos). Crazy Rich Asians I didn’t like at first, but warmed to and enjoyed.

Language Learning Goals for October

Guarani

Vocabulary – I’ll keep doing my daily session on Duolingo and should be really close to my second time round by the end of the month.

Grammar – My writing is proving a great chance to learn bits of grammar as and when I come across it. I’ll keep this up.

Reading – My course book is a great resource for bits of writing. Now I’ve read through the first storybook, I’m going to reread some of it in October.

Listening – I’m enjoying the music I’ve found and will keep doing that, with focused listening using the religious podcasts from time to time.

Writing – I’ll aim to write 13 sentences at least 3 times week.

Speaking – I probably won’t start speaking Guarani weekly on Instagram this month as I’ll be going to Croatia and Slovenia mid-month.

Korean

Memrise + Drops – I’ll keep working to make this regular habit a daily habit.

Living Language – I’ll likely do one chapter this month, taking me to the end of chapter 5. As I learn one bit, I then find further resources elsewhere to help consolidate it. This is working well so I’ll keep doing this.

Other Languages (French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Mandarin, Japanese, Esperanto, Indonesian)

Study Time – I absolutely loved my 20/20/20 routine in my mornings in September, so I’ll be keeping this up, and keeping track of how many sessions I get done in each language.

Writing – The 712 More Things to Write About book is working really well, so I’ll keep that up as well.

Listening – Still going to be listening to the SBS podcast feeds mostly daily Monday to Friday.

Language Reading Challenge

The topic for Shannon’s Language Reading Challenge over at Eurolinguiste this month is “Try out a new course book (can just be the first chapter or the entire book)”.

I’m working quite well with the Living Language for Korean, and there’s not many coursebooks out there for Guarani (at least none I can find online!) so I’ll try one of the Korean courses on Live Lingua from the FSI, DSI or SOLT.

In other news…

My goals are quite simple this month as I’m heading to Croatia and Slovenia mid-month for the Polyglot Conference happening at the end of the month. I’ll be speaking at the event at the new Friday Language Learning Event. It’s not too late to register and come along!
