Language Learning Review for June

1) I want to restart my twice daily walks listening to Say Something in Manx and Say Something in Welsh.

I think it must have happened this month that Say Something In Welsh is now only available for premium members. Not a problem at all! I totally respect that.

But as a really passive learner, I know I won’t be using it enough to make paying worth it for me at this stage.

I’m grateful however that the Manx course is still openly available, so I’ve been focusing on listening to this on my walks as well.

I’ve also added in listening to the Talk To Me In Korean podcast on Spotify too.

2) I want to have at least one italki lesson in Chinese, Korean, Indonesian and Guarani.

These are all booked and happening the final weekend of June, just after this post will be live!

I’ve been focusing on writing sentences and practice to share with my teachers.

3) I want to keep experimenting with Duolingo.

Yes, this happened!

I’m still using Duolingo daily and finding it helps to keep the simplest contact with languages I’m not actively learning right now.

Look out for an episode of The Fluent Show coming very soon about revisiting Duolingo!

4) Get “Coursey” with Korean and Chinese!

This has happened!

The goal was really to make Talk To Me In Korean and YoYo Chinese a more regular part of my routine.

Now it’s become a more regular part of my routine, for July, I’ll start looking more specifically at how far I’d like to go by the end of the month.

Language Learning Goals for July

General Goals

1) Keep up twice daily walks with Say Something in Manx and Talk To Me In Korean.

At the moment, Manx in the morning and Korean at lunchtime is working quite well.

Perhaps halfway through the month, I’ll look into adding another or switching things. Perhaps that’ll come later down the line when I’ve finished my Manx course. We’ll see.

2) One italki lesson in Chinese, Korean, Indonesian and Guarani.

I’ve been looking forward to these lessons at the end of the month.

After my italki* lessons are done this weekend, I’ll get some more booked up for the end of July as it’s worked as a great motivator!

Manx

1) Finish Level 1 audio lessons on Say Something in Manx

I’m up to Lesson 8 of 10 so far, so it shouldn’t take me long to finish the Level 1 Audio lessons.

2) Make written notes on Say Something in Manx lessons not yet written up

Since restarting, I haven’t had a chance to sit down and “process” the new stuff I’ve been learning.

Focusing on getting to lesson 10, and not worrying about advancing to Level 2 will help give me time to sit down and focus on reviewing what I’ve learnt already.

3) Get back into Brainscape

Adrian Cain (who is exactly the person every language in a situation like Manx needs!) has made a great course on Brainscape.

I was using this pretty regularly back before the ~corona times~.

My plan is to gently ease this back into my weekly routine as the sentences and language in the course is great.

4) Write a page in Manx using what I know by the end of the month

I was really surprised when I opened my Manx notebook for the first time in a few months to see how I left things…

After months of very casual "goals", I'm finally at a place where I'm ready to get back on track with my language learning goals. Here's my language goals for July 2020. ➔

Look at all that Manx!

I want to write a whole page now in July. Easy! Let’s do it!

Korean

1) Complete Review of Completed Lessons on TTMIK

Much like Manx, I had worked through quite a bit of the first two free courses on Talk To Me In Korean before taking a break.

Before diving in and picking up where I left off, I want to finish revisiting the stuff I’ve already “learnt”. Because I’m using “learnt” in the loosest sense there.

2) Write 30 sentences in Korean

One thing that’s always helpful, especially for a language I find more on the difficult side, like Korean, is writing practise.

I’m not worried about writing an essay or speech with a continual flow just yet.

However, I’m committing to write 30 sentences in Korean in July. One a day with a one day break. Or all together in one session. We’ll see – again!

I’ll be using the grammar points from TTMIK, the Memrise course I’ve made from lesson notes with teachers, and vocab lists if I’m stuck for more.

3) Speak Korean on Instagram once a week!

I’m not great at keeping my Instagram Highlights up to date – especially when it comes to language practise!

I want to speak more, and right now I don’t have time to commit to more online lessons.

So, instead, I’m committing to speaking on Instagram in Korean at least once a week and saving it to my Highlight.

4) One italki lesson in Korean

I’ll book in another lesson for the end of the month!

Mandarin Chinese

1) Finish Level 2 of Beginner Conversational on YoYoChinese

YoYoChinese has been very helpful so far!

I was sceptical at the very beginning because I’ve “done” the early stuff in Mandarin.

However, I’m learning so much about pronunciation, and it’s always helpful to get a refresher on the basic stuff when it’s been a while!

By the end of July, I’ll get to the end of Level 2 of the Beginner Conversational Course.

2) Speak Chinese on Instagram once a week!

Why not? Let’s speak all the languages on Instagram weekly!

3) One italki lesson in Mandarin Chinese

I’ll be booking this after my lesson at the end of June.

Indonesian

1) Revisit Teach Yourself Complete Indonesian

Indonesian is probably the language that I’ve done the least with this month.

To help change that, I’ll revisit my Teach Yourself Complete Indonesian course.

Rather than work through everything in order, my plan is to be very open going into it and picking what I need to review and relearn.

2) Make a playlist of Indonesian music

You know me. You know I love music in different languages.

But weirdly, my Indonesian music mix is lacking!

I will make a playlist on Spotify in July of Indonesian music to fall in love with.

3) Write a page in Indonesian using what I know by the end of the month

I’m pretty good at writing in Indonesian! So let’s do this more!

I can and will write a whole page of Indonesian with a consistent flow by the end of July.

4) One italki lesson in Indonesian

Again, I’ll book this by the end of the month.

Guarani

1) Be well into (if not finished) Unit 3 of Hablemos el Guarani

My new teacher gave me a PDF textbook in the first lesson we had together and it’s really helpful!

I’ve slowly been working through it but in July, I want to make sure I’m well into Unit 3, if not finished.

2) Write a page in Guarani using what I know by the end of the month

This is a challenge! But one I’m ready for.

I LOVE expressing myself in Guarani so I’m committing to write a whole page in the language in July.

3) One italki lesson in Guarani

I’ll book this after my lesson too!
