How Does Language Life Work? (Everything You Need To Know)

The Core Principles & Processes

One of the biggest questions I get about Language Life is how it works for any language. For a full answer to that question, I recommend this episode of How To Learn A Language. The episode explains how I’ve been able to teach people 27 languages I don’t know (as well as 9 that I do!)

But the short answer is that there are a series of Core Principles & Processes that work for learning any language.

And no, these aren’t generic or bland because they’re not specific to just one language.

They’re actually really useful & easy to remember Principles & Processes that you’re able to tweak and adjust if needed for a specific language or situation.

Because it’s not just languages that change. There needs to be room to adjust for specific situations too.

For example, one thing I teach is how important it is for faster fluency to develop a Solo Speaking Habit. If you’re a complete beginner, this might feel intimidating to start with. But it’s still a useful Process to apply for yourself. That’s because this, like everything I teach, is adaptable and works at any level.

So if you’re a beginner, you don’t need to perform a word-perfect monologue to check off your Solo Speaking Habit. You can simply say some individual words aloud, you can read something that’s already written (by yourself or someone else), and you can progress to speak more each time as you improve.

The Program Structure

It would be all too easy (and boring for you!) to get these Core Principles & Processes bullet pointed and handed to you on a PDF. But there’s a problem there.

That doesn’t really account for the uniqueness of every language learning situation. There’s little support to adjust and apply to your unique language, personality, and environmental situation.

This is why many things you may have tried before didn’t really work. Perhaps you got only so far (and not as far as you wanted) before things fizzled out.

I built Language Life to be different.

So the program consists of 3 core elements that compliment each other, so you get the full package of what you need to actually become fluent in any language on demand.

Those 3 elements are: the Self-Study Library, direct Support & Feedback, and Regular Practice opportunities.

We’ll dig into each one in more detail so you can see how they work.

The Self-Study Library

The Self-Study Library is at the heart of Language Life. This is where you’ll learn the Principles & Processes that make up all successful language learning.

Of course, there’s lessons on language topics like Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Vocabulary, and Grammar.

But things don’t end there.

I found from years of experience as a language learner and teacher, that those are not the only factors that affect how well you learn a language.

So we consider more that matters.

We also have lessons on topics like Mindset, Motivation, Goals, and Habits.

These things matter because they keep you moving forward in the right direction rather than wasting time on resources, activities, and methods that don’t work for you.

We look at Balance, and I share with you how you can learn multiple languages at once without losing it!

This is so important because there’s multiple ways to multilingualism. You don’t have to wait until you’re fluent in one before starting your next language. I show you how.

And we consider how to Integrate languages into your life & Discover new areas of enjoyment.

This matters because your language learning should be an enjoyable and relevant part of your life, not a flimsy extra that has nothing to do with everything else you’re interested in.

The Human Support & Feedback

The Self-Study Library on its own is great. I’m not gonna lie.

But, things really begin to bloom when you combine that with the human Support & Feedback you get throughout your time inside Language Life.

This is included in the program to ensure that you actually have a chance to successfully apply what you learn in the Self-Study Library. And there’s plenty of ways you get this Support & Feedback.

First up is our Monthly Reviews & Feedback. At the end of every month, you’re invited to share with me your Monthly Review of your language learning. What worked, what didn’t, what you’re planning for the coming month.

I then share my Feedback on what you’ve shared, and offer suggestions for ways you may want to adjust going forward, including language specific recommendations & resources.

This chance for reflection is a hugely important skill to develop during your time in the program, as it’ll only get quicker and easier with time, so you’ll be ready to do it for yourself by the time you finish Language Life.

Secondly, throughout the Self-Study Library, you get End of Chapter 1:1 Check-Ins. This is our chance to put our heads together and apply everything you just learnt to your current situation. So again, the language specifics come in here too.

These End of Module 1:1 Check-Ins matter because the last thing you want is to be left out in the lurch with your newly acquired knowledge! We make sure you’ve got everything you need and you’re confident in how to use it.

Thirdly, the Question Bank Private Podcast Feed.

This is how your regular questions get answered in Language Life.

No waiting around on a long Zoom call at an inconvenient time.

Instead, you submit unlimited questions, and I respond with personalised answers to our private podcast feed, the Question Bank.

Finally, our Live Calls.

We intentionally don’t have an overload of unnecessary calls inside Language Life. Instead, we have impactful and actually-worth-your-time calls.

Like our monthly Dabblers’ Den, which is a chance to learn a new language every month together. These are open to all, but only Language Life members get replay access.

And our Cosy Chats, which happen quarterly and are a great chance to meet other members and discuss interesting & relevant language learning topics.

When I upgraded our call setup, one Language Life member said the calls felt like the missing piece!

The Regular Practice

And finally, within Language Life, you get multiple opportunities for Regular Practice in the languages you’re learning.

How does this bit work for any language? With well-crafted Speaking & Writing Prompts, and Challenges.

There’s 7 new Speaking & Writing Prompts each week, so enough for a daily chance to produce some writing or speaking in the languages you’re learning.

I share with you How to Use Prompts At Any Level in a workshop of the same name! So you can be confident that you’ll still get chances to practice, regardless of your level or how creative you think you are.

Plus, our Challenges are designed to get you going beyond just words and grammar. They’re often a mix of task-based activities, language & cultural exploration, and program engagement reminders. So a great feature for you if you do well with external accountability!
