Join me and others at the Language Career Summit - a modern 'career day' event for the foreign language industry.

Back in 2012, the internet was a very different place. So different in fact, that I didn’t even consider it as a place to work.

So when I left my job in a school to start my own tutoring business, the internet was actually an annoyance.

“Well, you need to get a website”, people would tell me. I rolled my eyes.

“Do I? Really? Another task for the to do list?”

I agreed to my digital business card/shop window and set it up to pretty much leave it be for 2 years.

Then, I needed the internet. I needed to expand, to go beyond the students I’d been teaching in real life.

As I took things more seriously, I began to discover the countless ways you could teach languages online.

The truths and myths behind terms like “passive income” and “digital product” and “online course”.

A whole world of possibility opened up to me.

You see, I never really wanted to teach in a traditional sense. The idea of summer holidays was nice, but the thought of going home each day to mark book after book after book after…well, you get the point. It didn’t appeal.

Yet here in front of me stood a whole array of options through which I could teach languages, teach people how to learn languages, and even teach people how to teach online.

Where I am now isn’t a language career that could have been suggested or predicted back in school.

In fact, I do remember one teacher telling us that we would be going into a world of work with a whole host of jobs that didn’t exist then. That they were training us for a world that would look very different to how it did.

As much as I didn’t enjoy his assemblies, he was right.

So if you’ve loved languages for as long as you remember but always felt that teaching or translation weren’t for you (because that’s all your school careers advisor recommended), know that there’s so much more you can do.

Work that lights you up and lets you use your languages.

I’m so grateful for Kris Broholm of Actual Fluency creating an event about just this.
