The Solo Language Learner Planner

Wondering how to keep motivated with language learning? A language planner could be just what you're looking for! Here's how to use a language planner...

That’s just a few of the planning pages included in The Solo Language Learner Planner. To see the full list, take a look right here.

The planner is what I use regularly to get my language learning goals and plans out of my head and in front of me.

Like I mentioned above, the planner is print-ready but also digital-ready, meaning that if you prefer, you can keep your planner saved on your computer and plan things out there instead of on paper. Oh hey, 21st century! Ha!

The best part about the planner is that it only costs once and it lasts forever. Quite the steal.

Language Learning Review for April

So, I actually didn’t set any goals for April, or do a #ClearTheList post in fact!

As more and more plans fell away in March, and April totally changed shape, I knew the right thing for me was to just see what flowed.

We should have been filming Language Stories for the first two weeks of April, and then I was due to fly out to Barcelona for a week on the first ever Polyglot Cruise. As you can probably imagine, none of this happened. So April has been slightly different to what I expected! I mean, hasn’t it been that way for all of us?!

Knowing this, after months of learning Manx and (to a lesser extend) Welsh for these initial filming trips was quite disheartening. Our current plans are to postpone all Language Stories filming to 2021, but we shall see what the future brings, I guess.

Anyway, on the language learning front, this meant I set Manx and Welsh aside as it felt bittersweet to keep studying them.

My open approach led me to studying some Irish on FutureLearn, a weekend of quite intense Norwegian study, and playing with Arabic on Duolingo. That was amongst planting every seed from the food I ate, taking online art classes, and making a sourdough starter, you understand. I’m a millennial in quarantine, what did you expect?

Language Learning Goals for May

Towards the end of April, I found out from a Facebook Group that the italki Language Challenge* has recently opened up. Good timing, huh?

So, I’ve joined and set myself a goal of 20 hours.

So far I have lessons booked for each of the languages I’ve studied. I’m going to use this time as a little boost to challenge what I already know.

I also understand Duolingo now I’ve figured out how to get a continual supply of “hearts” so I’ll be using that each day for a little Arabic, Norwegian and whatever else takes my fancy.

There are no specific goals other than that right now.

I highly recommend letting yourself play with language learning from time to time.

How I Can Help Right Now

It’s weird right now. On the one hand, the work most of us do feels so insignificant. I can’t doctor, I don’t deliver food, I’m not a carer.

But then I realise how much I’ve been enjoying taking online courses, having live online lessons, watching things and listening to music (by which I mean mostly Fiona Apple’s new album…) and I realised how helpful anything can be for some of us.

And I know that what I have to offer will be helpful to some people in that same way right now. So I want to use this post as a chance to share how I can help, both if you’re learning a language at home or teaching languages online.
