Language Learning Review for November

My language goals for November? A big fat zero!

I didn’t set myself any goals for November as we’d just returned from Bulgaria at the end of October, which meant I’d just finished an intensive 6 weeks or so of Bulgarian study. I wanted to give myself time to play with my routine and reassess which languages I wanted. It’s gone well…!

Language Learning Goals for December

For the past two weeks of November, I’ve been playing with this routine and enjoying it so my goal for December is to keep up with it.

I’m taking my one hour of language study time in the morning and splitting it into 3 20 minute time blocks each day.

I’m then studying 3 different languages each day, and 15 languages in total for the week.

Yup. Pretty multiple language heavy!

Now here’s the thing, some of these languages I know well already, others I’ve studied to some level, and the final five are completely new or in need of a review.

So I’m not learning 15 languages from scratch and the ones I am newer to, I don’t have a time pressure to work to.

This works really well for me as I love the structure of it and the contact with so many languages. But it may not work for you, so be sure to figure out what does!

Here’s the languages…

French – My French is strong so I’m focusing on polishing. Lots of reading articles aloud and making notes on new vocab to learn.

Spanish – Same with Spanish! I’m enjoying Flipboard for finding articles to read. I might share more about this soon as it’s a relatively new tool to me.

German – Again with the Flipboard. Also some time on Lyrics Training app and reviewing old Memrise words.

Portuguese – Some Lyrics Training but also I have an old Portuguese intermediate textbook that I’m slowly working my way through.

Italian – Trying not to listen to Mahmood every day! Ha. I’m also using Flipboard for Italian.

Japanese – Working through Teach Yourself Read and Write Japanese Scripts. I finished this book years ago but it’s fun to review it all again.

KoreanTalk To Me In Korean!

Bulgarian – Currently finishing up my notes from the coursebook I had from the library. When I’m done I’ll be looking for suggestions on Bulgarian if you can help!

Mandarin – I’m using YoYoChinese and learning so much basic stuff I never learnt first time around. Like how to pronounce ‘ren’ correctly, and what happens when different tones come next to each other.

Guarani – Reading short texts from my coursebook aloud and working on writing my own sentences focusing on one key word each time.

Burmese – Ahh! I love this language but I’ve never really learnt it properly. So part of my time is being spent on getting to grips with the script and part on working through Burmese By Ear thoroughly (including the stuff I learnt years ago).

Thai – I have an old Teach Yourself Thai book that I’m combining with some audio courses online to help with pronunciation and speaking.

Kristang – So maybe of all these languages, this is the one you might know least about. We made a Language Stories episode on Kristang and I bought a book from one of the authors who we interviewed. I’m happy to finally get to use it!

Malay – Still fascinated by this part of the world and hope to revisit sometime so starting with Malay for the first time with an old Colloquial Malay book I picked up in Penang. It’s quite familiar through my time studying Indonesian.

Indonesian – Why learn Malay only when I could double up and go further with Indonesian too?! I’m using my Teach Yourself Complete Indonesian set.

Right now I’m loving the diversity but we’ll see how this goes as we begin to head in to the new year. I might decide at some point to focus on one or two languages for a while so it’s also an exercise in seeing where my attention and interest flow.
