Oh hey! It’s been a while. Over the past couple of months I’ve been super busy with house move stuff and didn’t get time to blog or even share my #ClearTheList posts for September and October! But now I’m here, and ready to share my language learning goals for November 2020.

Over the past couple of months I've been super busy. But now I'm here, and ready to share my language learning goals for November 2020. ➔

Language Learning Review for October (+ September too I guess!)

Phew. Quite unexpectedly mid-August we found ourselves getting ready to move house. Everything kinda fell into place and with the UK government dropping stamp duty for a limited time (a big tax you pay when you move house here), we couldn’t not go for it.

Only problem was that around a month in, our buyers pulled out. We were devastated.

All the stages of grief (and one very crazy Women In Language week) later and we had to go back on the market in a rush to find a buyer before the end of the tax break.

So as you can imagine, October has been filled with all of this too!

We’re hoping things are ticking over nicely now with the new buyer but hey, we’ve been burnt and don’t want to speak too soon.

Oh yes, and I had my first MA assignment to write throughout all this mess.

So what does all this mean for language learning? Hmm, not much.

Hence why there were no #ClearTheList posts for September and October. There wasn’t much to review and no goals to set!

Language Learning Goals for November

As we head into November however, things feel a little more in control and I’m ready to commit to some language learning goals again. Still alongside actually moving soon, likely in a second national lockdown and final edits on that MA assignment. So it’s optimistic, but I’m here for that.

I’m going to keep my language goals simple this month, but I’m still going to set them. Goals are one of the best ways to keep track of your progress and that’s always handy, even if the progress is minimal sometimes.

Indonesian

I’m really enjoying Indonesian this year so I’m following that flow.

This week, I had an italki package* due to expire with my teacher so I’ve got a lesson almost everyday. I’ll be fluent by Friday.

Joking of course, but my goal with Indonesian is to keep it going once the package is done.

I don’t want to book any more lessons or packages with teachers until after we’re moved. So what I do with Indonesian with the time I have will be open to my choice!

I can pretty much communicate most of what I want to say right now in Indonesian, but often in very basic terms. So I’m at a point where it’s vocab expansion I need. Once I’ve finished my own ‘Indonesian Learnings From Lessons’ course on Memrise, I’ll be revisiting this one with 2000+ words.

Mandarin

My italki package* with my Mandarin tutor just expired, but I need to get everything we’ve learnt recently into my Memrise course so I can revisit and learn it well.

My goal is to transfer what we’ve learnt to my personal Mandarin Memrise course.

Guarani

Once my first MA assignment is over, the next module is sociolinguistics. I’m really looking forward to this one as it’s where I can apply and learn more about the language situation in Paraguay. You bet I’ll be looking for a way to write about Guarani in this assignment!

So as I get ready for this, Guarani is my third language in November.

My goal is to sit and read at least 2 pages from my bilingual reader at least once a week. My focus here is extensive reading. The goal is to get comfortable reading Guarani even when I don’t understand it all, and to become more familiar with the written language.

A simple goal but sometimes they’re the best ones.

Everything Else

I’m really enjoying Memrise right now and have courses I’m actively reviewing for Portuguese, Italian, Bulgarian, German, Korean and then reviewing and completing for Yoruba, Kristang and Manx.

My goal is to keep this up daily with at least one check in to one course each day.

And that’s it this month! Super simple goals to keep things ticking over and give me something to focus on other than house lingo (which is basically another language in itself, ammaright?!)
