Language Learning Goals Review for June

Lao, Khmer + Thai

Lao and Khmer, yes. I can say hello, thank you and a small handful of other odd words here and there.

Thai however…well, we ended up flying to Japan instead of going to Thaiand. As you do.

Thailand wasn’t exciting us, we had no Language Stories interviews to film there, and we figured we could make a much more interesting mini series from 10 days in Japan!

Expect that to go on YouTube in a couple of months.

Language Reading Challenge

The topic for Shannon’s Language Reading Challenge over at Eurolinguiste last month was “A book on learning strategies”.

I’d already started reading Think Small by Owain Service and Rory Gallagher and finished that.

It was a great reminder and confirmation of lots that I say already about goal setting – so that was good!

I’ll share some of my favourite lessons from it soon.

Language Learning Goals for July

I have big plans for my language learning routine when we get home. It’s been so shaken up this year that I’ve really been able to see clearly what works and doesn’t work for me.

However, we get home mid-month, and I know those first two weeks back (the last two in July) are going to be packed with seeing friends and family, opening mail(!), seeing what’s new in our hometown etc…

So I’m not going to overwhelm myself to begin with. Plus…jetlag.

Guaraní

It may seem an odd choice to keep studying a language that’s spoken half way around the world when you have no immediate plans to go there again!

But I know I’ll be back some day (+ I’m looking at options to show you Paraguay too) so I want to keep on improving my Guaraní in the meantime.

Plus, I’m kinda in love with the language.

Duolingo – Using Duolingo for Guaraní contact almost every day has worked really well while we’ve been away. I’m not the buggest fan of the app, but it gives me a tiny bit of exposure to the language and I want to keep that going while we settle back into home life.

Figure out my plan – Like I said, I have big plans for when we get home, but they need to be ironed out a bit. During the last two weeks of July, I want to figure out the what/how/when of my Guaraní going forward.

Language Reading Challenge

The topic for Shannon’s Language Reading Challenge over at Eurolinguiste this month is ” Something written by someone from a country that speaks your language (book doesn’t have to be in your target language)”.

Seeing as I’ll be reunited with my Guaraní books I bought in Paraguay (I dropped them off in London with my mum on our journey across to Asia) I think this counts for this month!

I also want to start looking back to May, which I skipped whilst being away, namely:

A tutorial, recipe, or lesson in your target language (if you’re up for a bigger challenge, read an entire book on the subject)

For this I plan to find some Paraguayn recipes, possibly in Guaraní, to learn how to make some of their delicious foods!

Trip Update

Like I mentioned above, we ended up coming to Japan! Yay!

We’re leaving a couple of days after this goes live, and then we’ll be heading to Penang and Melacca in Malaysia for Language Stories filming before ending with A TON of interviews in Singapore.

I absolutely love Singapore and was initially worried we wouldn’t find anyone to speak with for Language Stories as I was struggling to begin with, but after our first visit there when we arrived in Asia back in April, I found a couple of helpful leads and contacted some people and now we’ve got a REALLY interesting mix of interviews to look forward to!

In other news…

I can finally share the news with you that on Wednesday 26th September, I’ll be discussing language learning in the modern age with Olly Richards, Richard Simcott, and Alex Rawlings live in London.

It’s all happening at a rooftop event hosted by Michel Thomas (you know, the language courses – not just some guy known as Michel to his friends and Mr Thomas to everyone else).

Tickets cost just £11.07 (that’s £10 plus the booking fee).

And honestly, it’s an absolute STEAL. With your ticket, you get a free Michel Thomas START course and a glass of wine, as well as the chance to chat with us and ask your burning language questions!

But there’s only 100 tickets, and they’re expected to go quickly.

Click here to get your ticket before it’s too late!
